This doesn’t happen very often… No, this time I really mean it! For me, it’s a natural thing to frequently sprinkle my writing with superlatives and to season my articles, tweets, and comments with words like “sensational,” “great,” and “fantastic.” But how often does a person have the opportunity to write about a world premiere that affects not only our Group but also the entire automotive sector?
For many years, my appointment calendar has been full of events and trips. When I drive from point A to point B during our events, or when I’m driving in my adopted home in Taiwan, it’s usually in a V-Class vehicle. Why is that? One reason is that the V-Class comfortably conveys eight people, including the driver, to their destination. My dear sustainability-loving friends, THAT’S what I call efficiency. And I’m not saying that simply in order to do some “greenwashing.” No! One of the ways — in fact, one of the main ways — to define sustainable mobility is by citing the number of people who are transported by a single platform.
I think that in the past 23 years we’ve done a damn good job with the V-Class. It’s safe, comfortable, and efficient. It has abandoned the boring image of vans to become a premium full-size MPV!
And now all this is available in an all-electric vehicle!
With the Mercedes-Benz EQV (Stromverbrauch kombiniert: 27,0 kWh/100 km; CO2-Emissionen kombiniert: 0 g/km, Angaben vorläufig),we’re the first automaker to position ourselves in this market segment. Frankly, I’m rather proud of that. My colleagues in the development department have really done sensational work and created a van, a “people mover,” and a transport vehicle that has no equal.
Output: 150 kW
Range: 405 km
Charging speed: charging from 10 to 80% in 45 minutes
The first time around, all of this sounds very straightforward and matter-of-fact, but in my opinion it’s really a game-changer. This is a vehicle that has the potential to define an entire segment.
Imagine electric Mercedes-Benz shuttles being used in the future at events…or by hotels, at airports, in cities, and by official institutions.
It’s not just a matter of using some electric means of transportation once in a while. No, the important thing is HOW it’s done. This is the Mercedes of electric vans, and for our customers that means, above all, the features and expert craftsmanship that give the EQV the stamp of premium quality we consider so important.
And this excellence is not limited to the high-quality interior equipment we’re already familiar with. No, because of course we’ve also equipped this van with very EQ-specific features that can be conveniently called up via our MBUX system.
Whether you use voice control, the steering wheel, the touchpad or the display, you can always keep an eye on your charge status — and of course you always know where the next charging station is located. I think it’s very convenient that the Mercedes me app can plan routes and send them directly to the EQV. I’m sure our fleet-operating customers will love that!
Driving efficiently made easy
As our esteemed colleague Benjamin Kähler, the head of eDrive@VANs, has explained in his blog post, the specific driving modes of the EQV will also support extremely efficient driving. The ECO Assistant E+ helps the driver to operate the vehicle in the most efficient way by optimally controlling its energy recuperation. In other words, while the driver is braking the vehicle, this assistant recharges the battery with braking energy.
And that, of course, is what makes the EQV exciting for fleet-operating customers. People who drive efficiently conserve energy and thus save money, and in this business these are naturally important selling points.
And that doesn’t mean making any compromises with regard to the passengers, who are transported as comfortably as we would expect. That’s why I consider the EQV a symbol of sustainable luxury.
Yes, Mercedes-Benz is a luxury brand, but companies that want to make sure luxury stays desirable in the future have to think and act in terms of sustainability.
I think that’s exactly what we’ve managed to do with the Mercedes-Benz EQV — and that brings me back to my introductory remarks. This vehicle is a world premiere, but it’s also a milestone! Not only for us but for the entire sector — and it feels so good to be able to write about it!
