The new Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 – Elegant sportiness for daily use

I can’t get my fill of the first press photos. The spiky Frankfurt skyline in the background is glowing, and so is the sunshine-yellow model that’s on display.

In a few days this impressive light show will be repeated in the midst of the high-rises of New York. That’s when our new baby will celebrate its gala premiere. I’m glad to be able to show you the first photos of the new model on behalf of our entire team, and also tell you a bit about the project here and now.

The initial idea leading to the CLA 35 (Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4MATIC: Kraftstoffverbrauch kombiniert: 7,3-7,2 l/100 km; CO2-Emissionen kombiniert: 167-164 g/km.*) arose back in 2016. We wanted to create a vehicle that inspires strong emotions and combines sportiness with a high level of everyday utility. This was no easy task, because we wanted the design to be that of an iconic Mercedes Benz with its flowing lines and coupe-like silhouette.

So an “emotional” exterior would not be sufficient. The CLA 35 also had to set a high benchmark for driving dynamics. That’s the combination we systematically created. Thanks to the steplessly variable all-wheel AMG Performance 4MATIC drive, we were able to differentiate the driving experience across a broad range. In the CLA 35 we’ve also succeeded in uniting the previously irreconcilable — sportiness with great longitudinal and transverse dynamics, perfect long-distance comfort, and everyday utility.

The perfect combination of speed and beauty

With its widely formed wheel wells, slender waist and flat roof line, the CLA 35 is a real eyecatcher. Its elegance and sportiness can be seen at first glance. And it’s not only men who are impressed. The CLA of the previous generation has shown that women are especially attracted by its iconic design.

The compact CLA 35 also embodies the classic dynamics that the design team from Affalterbach is known for. Its radiator grille with the typical AMG double slats and the flics on the air intakes make the front of the model unmistakably sporty. The aerodynamically optimized 18-inch light-alloy wheels, sharply drawn side skirts, the rear apron with its visible air outlet grilles and the diffuser, as well as the trailing edge on the trunk lid clearly show from the side and the back as well that the CLA 35 is a genuine AMG. And because its track width is wider than that of the A-Class, the CLA 35 rests a lot more comfortably on the road.

Sunshine yellow: This is me!

First impressions count, don’t they? You can imagine the lively discussion that preceded our decision to paint the presentation model of the CLA 35 sunshine yellow. However, it was clear from the very start that the model should radiate the message “Look here — this is me!” We decided on yellow, because it’s a sporty and striking color. A special paint was developed for this model. “Sunshine yellow” was born. I don’t think we could’ve found a better color to express the character of the CLA 35. It’s a wonderful match!

The whole range of AMG know-how for an exciting driving experience

Thanks to the CLA 35’s impressive 2.0-liter turbo engine with 306 hp and 400 Nm, even the entry-level AMG will give drivers a constant exciting tingle in the stomach. In combination with the AMG exhaust system, it will also make them smile from ear to ear. And that’s not to mention all the other features we’ve created for this model. I especially like the widescreen cockpit with its AMG display styles — and MBUX is a really step into the future. I’m also fascinated by the new vehicle dynamics control system, AMG DYNAMIC. In its advanced mode, this system makes the CLA 35 a real source of driving pleasure on winding country roads.

I’m proud to be part of the whole

When I look at this car today, I’m really proud to have helped create its design. The knowledge that I’m a member of such a great team with great ideas for great products motivates me anew every day. Back in 2013, when we launched the A 45 AMG on the market, I was convinced by the concept behind the compact models. Its success has proved that we made the right decisions. The sales figures surpassed all of our expectations.

That’s why it’s all the more gratifying that we’re now significantly expanding the portfolio with new products and the new generation, and that we can now offer the driving pleasure that’s typical of the AMG in new segments. Being able to also offer this combination of driving dynamics, sportiness, and breathtaking styling in the entry-level segment is very special. And I’m glad I was able to help write this new chapter of the AMG success story.

Matthias Schmidt has been an AMG man through and through since 2002. He was initially a product manager in charge of the major vehicle series in the AMG portfolio — the S-Class, the SL and the then CL. In 2010 he took on the responsibility for the compact vehicle series at AMG. Today it’s the compact models that are the stars at AMG, and he’s proud to be able to present the brand to a much larger target group. On weekends he makes trips to outstanding wine regions in his classic AMG in order to keep his “work-wine balance” at the ideal level.
