Today it feels as though it’s the seventy-fourth day of January. I’ve got a bad case of the winter blues, and I’ve had them since the beginning of this year. The sky is gray, the days are short, and it’s SO COLD! I’m ready for the winter to start fading away.
Unfortunately, I haven’t yet found out how to get rid of bad weather — but I do know how I can cure my bad mood. Today I’m going to the rehearsal for the world premiere (on January 30 and 31, 2019) of the new V-Class and the Marco Polo. For me, the “V” stands for “vacation” and the thought of sunshine, leisure time, and sports is already making me smile. Today we’re going to take a look behind the scenes and examine all the details of the new vehicle models.
We’re presenting updated versions of these models — what we refer to as model refinements. In the fashion industry, you’d probably say that the vehicles are getting a makeover. The core elements of the models stay the same, and their new outward appearance is similar to the old one, but they’ve been given new colors, shapes and designs and of course — let’s get back into the automotive world — new and exciting functions.
Today we’re going to take a close look at all the innovations in these three vehicles: the new V-Class, the V-Class with AMG equipment, and the Marco Polo. And finally, I’ll even share with you a little spoiler about the Geneva Motor Show in March.
The V-Class: a VIP shuttle, a family car, and a transport vehicle
When I see a V-Class, what always comes to mind is the VIP shuttles with tinted windows at major events. But two experts from the team tell me that these vehicles are also used for very different purposes. The experts are Frank Bauer, who is responsible for Marketing Management for the V-Class and the Marco Polo, and Janine Kuehnert, who is on the coordination team at Construction Management Engines. Depending on how many seats are installed (between two and eight), the V-Class can accommodate a large family or sports equipment such as a surfboard or skis. This full size MPV is also used as a hotel shuttle.
The team that worked out the latest innovations for this model has responded to the customers’ wishes. But it also wanted to give the V-Class additional refinements that make sure our full size MPV stays a real trendsetter in its segment.
And that has resulted in the following TOP 5 highlights of the new V-Class and the Marco Polo:
1. More powerful and more efficient engines
Janine Kuehnert and Frank Bauer agree: One of the highlights of the new V-Class is its powerful engine! The four-cylinder OM 654 diesel engine has lower emissions and fuel consumption values, and its interior insulation against noise and vibrations has been improved even further.
The new top V 300 d engine has an output of 176 kW (239 hp) (Kraftstoffverbrauch kombiniert 6,3-5,9 l/100km, CO2-Emissionen kombiniert 165-154 g/km)1 and delivers even higher performance than before. It’s now available with 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission that makes for even more comfortable shifting and greater fuel efficiency. The two experts tell me that these are the top figures in the segment. Incidentally, if you’re a V-Class driver in a hurry, you should know that next to impressive 500Nm torque an additional 30 Nm of torque is available as a brief boost during the acceleration phase of the V 300 d engine. The experts refer to this as “overtorque.”
2. More luxury!
However, my personal highlight is in the vehicle’s interior. As we all know, the V-Class is synonymous with comfort and spaciousness — but the level of luxury in the new model is completely new. You can sit down in this vehicle, put your news luxuryseat in the fully reclined position, and get a massage!
Yes, you’ve heard me right, a massage! In the future, you don’t have to go to a spa — just sit down in the V-Class! As I lie back and relax in this position, I can see the new air vents in a sporty turbine look and the new two-line design of the instrument panel. I must admit that I had underestimated this vehicle. Frank Bauer agrees that the V-Class is “the most exciting and versatile model series in the Group”!
3. Safety and assistance systems
Every V-Class is ideally equipped with safety and assistance systems. Whether you’re going on vacation or just driving to the nearest supermarket, the Active Brake Assist and the Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus will make your trip even more safe and relaxed.
The Active Brake Assist can help you avoid (or minimize) rear-end collisions with other cars or accidents involving stationary obstacles or pedestrians crossing the street. Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus makes driving at night time more pleasant. It allows to permanently illuminate the road widely without dazzling others. If other cars are in front of the V-Class or are approaching it, parts of the highbeam are turned off. All other areas of the headlight stay in high beam mode.
4. Exterior design and the AMG line
The things you notice first about the car’s exterior are the redesigned bumpers with a striking air intake and the diamond design in the radiator grille. That’s good news for all those who like to have that certain extra touch and a bit of bling-bling. The V-Class is also available with AMG equipment, including the new diamond-design grille and chrome pins.
There’s also something new for wheel-rim fetishists: The new V-Class also comes with four new light alloy wheels.
5. New colors
In addition to the new colors Graphite Grey Metallic, Selenite Grey Metallic, and Steel Blue, our colleagues in the design department are offering a striking Hyacinth Red Metallic. You might find this color hard to imagine. As a layperson when it comes to colors, I would describe it as a mixture of fire-engine red and dark pink. I think it’s expressive and beautiful.
There’s also a new leather color, Tartufo — for me the name conjures up an Italian dessert — which I would call beige.
The Marco Polo: Dreaming of a summer in Sweden
I’ve saved the best for last. The Marco Polo makes me dream of a summer in Sweden and forget about the unpleasant camping vacations I’ve had on the shores of Lake Constance. After this model update at the very latest, Marco Polo drivers are sure to be the coolest campers wherever they go.
With the exception of the luxury seating, all of the innovations for the V-Class also apply to the Marco Polo model. In terms of comfort, luxury, and practicality, traveling in the Marco Polo fulfills all of my wishes. I’m all set for my next road trip… But let’s get back to the real world: For now, I’ll have to be content with dreaming and waiting for the summer.
P.S.: I’d also like to share with you an electrifying experience I had today: I was allowed to have a glimpse of the new Concept EQV. All I’m allowed to tell you at this point is that it’s chic and ultramodern. You can look forward to its premiere on March 5 in Geneva!
